Alpha-Pinene
Pine, alert — the THC moderator
Terpene
What is alpha-pinene?
Alpha-pinene is the most common form of pinene and one of the most abundant naturally occurring monoterpenes on earth — it accounts for the majority of all global monoterpene emissions and gives pine forests their signature scent. It's also found in rosemary, basil, and many cannabis strains.
Effects
Alpha-pinene is the terpene most associated with alertness, focus, and a sharp, clear-headed feeling — a favorite for daytime use. Russo's entourage research has focused on alpha-pinene's potential to modulate THC's effects: in animal studies it appeared to improve working memory, and the theory holds that it may reduce the short-term memory impairment and anxious edge of high-THC flower.
Research note
Reviews of alpha-pinene's pharmacology highlight anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective activity, plus bronchodilating effects when inhaled. It's the more studied of the two pinenes — and the one to look for if you want a functional, grounded high.
