Valencene
Sweet orange, citrusy
Terpene
What is valencene?
Valencene is a sesquiterpene named for the Valencia orange — it's a big part of that sweet, fresh orange scent. It's found in citrus peel and appears in some cannabis strains.
Effects
Valencene carries anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, and it's chemically related to nootkatone, the compound behind grapefruit's distinct aroma. On a COA, valencene points to a sweet, citrusy, fruity character — the kind of profile that reads 'orange' rather than 'lemon.'
Research note
Evidence is mostly preclinical, but its citrus fingerprint is one of the more distinctive minor-terpene notes. A 2018 study combining in vivo and in silico methods found valencene reduced ear edema and inflammation in mice, with molecular docking pointing to anti-inflammatory targets — real data behind the reputation.
