Sabinene

Peppery, woody, spicy

Terpene

What is sabinene?

Sabinene is a monoterpene found in black pepper, nutmeg, carrot seed, and hops — and it's one of the most abundant terpenes in some hop cultivars. Its aroma is spicy, woody, and peppery with a citrus lift.

Effects

Sabinene shows antibacterial and anti-inflammatory potential in research. In hops-heavy strains it contributes that peppery, woody character, and it's a useful one to recognize if you're tracking how a profile moves from 'citrus' toward 'spice.'

Research note

Research is early-stage, but sabinene's role in aroma is well established — it's a real driver of peppery notes. A 2024 study specifically on sabinene hydrate confirmed antimicrobial activity, and sabinene itself appears in analyses as an antibacterial contributor in spice-derived oils.
