Nerol

Fresh rose-citrus floral

Terpene

What is nerol?

Nerol is a monoterpenoid alcohol and the close chemical sibling of geraniol — nerol is the 'cis' isomer while geraniol is 'trans.' It's found in neroli, lemon balm, lemongrass, and other floral-citrus oils. Its aroma is fresh, rosy, and citrusy — softer and more delicate than geraniol.

Effects

Nerol shares geraniol's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. In a strain's profile it adds a sweet, floral-citrus freshness, often appearing alongside geraniol and linalool in 'rose and lavender' type profiles.

Research note

Most of the evidence is lab-based, so treat specifics with caution — its main contribution to cannabis is aromatic. A 2024 study found nerol showed synergistic antibacterial activity when combined with antibiotics against drug-resistant bacteria, hinting at a practical use that goes beyond fragrance.
