Myrcene

The most common — earthy, sedating

Terpene

What is myrcene?

Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in most cannabis strains, and it's everywhere in nature — found in mangoes, hops, lemongrass, and thyme. Its aroma is earthy, musky, and slightly clove-like, with a hint of herbal sweetness.

Effects

Myrcene is best known for its relaxing, sedating qualities — the classic 'couch-lock' feeling so often associated with indica-leaning strains. Strains high in myrcene are commonly chosen for evening relaxation, pain, and sleep. It's also the terpene thought to underlie much of the 'indica vs. sativa' distinction patients feel in practice.

The mango myth

You've probably heard it: eat a mango before you smoke and the high hits harder. The idea stems from myrcene's potential to lower the threshold of THC needed in the brain. The honest caveat — the evidence is mostly anecdotal, and a mango probably isn't going to dramatically change your session. Still, myrcene is one of the best-studied terpenes for how much it may shape a strain's effects.
