Fenchol

Fennel-camphor, fresh

Terpene

What is fenchol?

Fenchol is a monoterpenoid alcohol named for fennel, where it's found alongside basil and a few other culinary herbs. Its aroma is camphor-like with lemony and minty undertones.

Effects

Research highlights antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity, and fenchol is one of the compounds used in studies of aroma and relaxation — its camphor-fresh character reads as clean and grounding. In cannabis it's a minor contributor, adding a bright, herbaceous note.

Research note

As with most minor terpenes, human evidence is thin — its value in a profile is mostly aromatic. That said, a 2018 study of Cupressaceae essential oils found alpha-fenchol among the constituents driving the oils' antimicrobial activity, so it does carry a real, lab-measured effect.
