Camphene

Earthy, camphor-pine

Terpene

What is camphene?

Camphene is a monoterpene found in camphor oil, fir and spruce needles, ginger, and nutmeg. Its aroma is earthy and camphor-like — the piney, slightly medicinal note you associate with fir forests.

Effects

Camphene has a long history in topical herbal remedies and shows antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in research. In cannabis it contributes a woody, piney spice that pairs well with the pinenes, giving some strains a forest-floor depth rather than a bright citrus lift.

Research note

Research remains early, and camphene is usually a background player — but recognizing it helps explain why some flower reads more 'camphor' than 'pine.' A 2013 study of common terpenes found camphene produced antinociceptive (pain-relieving) and antioxidant activity in mice, giving it more than just aromatic appeal.
