d8-THC

THC's gentler isomer

Cannabinoid

What is delta-8-THC?

Delta-8-THC (d8-THC) is a close chemical cousin of delta-9-THC — the double bond that defines them sits at a different position in the molecule. It occurs naturally in cannabis only in trace amounts, so most commercial d8-THC is made by converting CBD — typically hemp-derived — through a chemical process called isomerization.

Effects

Users generally describe d8-THC as milder than d9-THC — a gentler, less anxious intoxicating effect — though individual response varies widely and it still shows up on a drug test. A 2022 review in the British Journal of Pharmacology summarizes what's known: d8-THC is a partial agonist at CB1 with roughly half to two-thirds of d9-THC's potency, and early evidence points to the same kind of anti-nausea and appetite effects at lower strength.

How to read it on a COA

If you see d8-THC on a report, it's usually a sign the product was formulated with converted hemp-derived distillate rather than plain flower, where d8 is essentially negligible. As with any converted product, transparency about the process matters.
