What is CBNA?

CBNA (cannabinolic acid) is the raw, acidic form of CBN. It forms as THCA degrades through oxidation over time, so it shows up more in aged or poorly stored flower. Apply heat and it converts to CBN, the mildly sedating cannabinoid.

Effects

Like its decarboxylated form CBN, CBNA is only mildly active and essentially non-intoxicating. Research on CBNA itself is limited, but what exists is interesting: a pilot study found CBNA produced strong antinociception in mice comparable to THC (with tolerance building over repeated doses), and a 2022 screen ranked CBNA among the five most potent acidic cannabinoids at blocking store-operated calcium entry — the immune-cell pathway that drives inflammatory cytokine release. Still, the practical takeaway is that finding CBNA on a COA is a sign the flower isn't fresh.
