What is CBGA?

CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) is the chemical starting point for most of the cannabis plant's cannabinoids — it's the 'mother cannabinoid.' Early in flower development, enzymes convert CBGA into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA, which is why fresh plant material tests high in those acids and only traces of CBGA itself.

Effects

Because it's an acidic, raw compound, CBGA is non-intoxicating. Early research points to anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective potential, and some studies have explored it for metabolic conditions. Most of this work is preclinical, and human data is still thin.

What the research shows

Two lines of evidence make CBGA genuinely interesting. First, in a screen of 22 cannabinoids, CBGA was the most potent inhibitor of store-operated calcium entry — a key driver of T-cell activation and inflammatory cytokine release — with a sub-micromolar IC50. Acidic cannabinoids as a group outperformed their decarboxylated counterparts, a strong hint that the acid form matters. Second, a 2023 study in human keratinocytes found CBGA (alongside THCV) suppressed several pro-inflammatory cytokines through the endocannabinoid system and MAPK signaling — evidence relevant to inflammatory skin conditions.

Research note

CBGA on a COA is usually present in small amounts — the interest in it is more about what it becomes than what it does on its own.
